Low Testosterone Treatment

AMARILLO -- Testosterone is what makes a man a man. For some reason though, more and more young men are experiencing decreased levels known as "Low T".

In the middle of doing a story on a book about low testosterone, written by Amarilloans Dr. Sloan Teeple and his wife Susan, I noticed a lot of the symptoms fit me. Okay, it was all of them. So, I decided to be a guinea pig. One exam and blood test later, sure enough, I had the testosterone level of a 90 year old man.

. Dr. Teeple says for whatever reason, testosterone levels in men have dropped significantly over the last 30-years. He says it could be environmental, or stress related, possibly even both.

The symptoms include low libido, fatigue, irritability, depression and memory problems, just to name a few.

Continuing in my role as guinea pig I decided to start treatment. According to Dr. Teeple, "it's a lifetime commitment once you start it because you're taking over the responsibility of what you're body's not doing."

The three most popular kinds of treatments are gels, injections and implants.

The gel is a daily treatment rubbed onto your skin. Depending on your insurance will cost you about $40/month.

Injections, the treatment I chose, consists of giving yourself a shot of testosterone in your buttocks or thigh every two weeks. It's the cheapest option running about $30/month.

And, implants, these are injected under your skin and will last about six months.

It's still early in my treatment, but Dr. Teeple says, "usually energy levels respond the quickest. And, sleeping, those are the things we see the quickest improvement. The libido is usually slower to respond, but usually in one to two months people are seeing a difference there."
