Going to college is quite a journey.

First, you pick a major, and you take classes that help you earn that degree along the way.

Every class has its own purpose. What you learn in one class will help in others in your quest to become a college graduate.

That same philosophy can be used when it comes to dieting. What you learn in one diet will help with other diets in your weight loss journey.

I never realized how true that statement was until I had weight-loss surgery less than two months ago.

During a trip to Houston last weekend, my wife, Janelle, and I discussed my progress since having gastric sleeve surgery April 15.

We talked about the ups and downs Ive experienced along the way because anyone who ever dieted knows this golden rule dieting is never easy.

Ive had my share of ups since the surgery, such as losing an average of more than one pound a day in any given week. But Ive also had my share of downs, such as having days of no weight loss.

Both scenarios are normal when it comes to dieting.
