Hormones in the body were designed to rejuvenate, regenerate and restore. They serve as powerful chemical messengers (communicators) sent to specific cells throughout your body to orchestrate many of your body's internal functions, as well as how your organs behave. There are many different hormones your body produces in order to achieve a balance. Even small fluctuations in levels can cause big changes in cells, or even disrupt the balance throughout your entire body. This is another reason to be cautious when selecting hormone replacement therapy. The goal should always be hormonal balance based in science, rather than experimentation or guessing. Many therapies merely attempt to replenish estrogen and/or progesterone and testosterone, but never achieve homeostasis. Too many physicians lack the expertise or knowledge to attain the proper outcome. Many endocrinologists will tell you that hormonal balance equates to health. Research continues to indicate that hormones are key to the intricate interrelationships of the body's parts and systems. They play a pivotal role in your overall health and well-being.
Conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) consists of standard doses of synthetic hormones without considering each person's individual hormonal profile. Therapy should be modified in accordance with clinical and laboratory results, as each individual is unique in what they may be lacking.
Hormonal fluctuation and depletion during perimenopause, menopause, and andropause can result in myriad of symptoms. Hormones really are a symphony, and in a symphony everything needs to be playing in tune. Hormone replacement therapy helps correct these depletions to protect against memory loss, helps to keep the heart healthy, aids bone reproduction, and promotes growth and repair. Insulin, growth hormone, testosterone, the estrogens, and DHEA are all hormones of growth and repair.
Bio-identical hormone therapy utilizes hormones that are bio-identical to what your body produces. The differences between synthetic and biologically identical hormones are in their chemical structures and functionality. BHRT hormones have the same chemical structure as the hormones created naturally in the human body. They are plant-derived and chemically changed to mirror human hormones.
In my next few editorials, I will discuss in more depth some specific hormones and their benefits, as well as symptoms of deficit or excess. Helping you to understand how important it is to keep your own personal symphony in tune is my goal. One size does not fit all; hormone replacement therapy should be individually customized for each and every person.
