Sunrise candidate: Commission needs a little less testosterone and a lot more estrogen

Imogene Ferguson is the only woman in a field of seven candidates running to fill the commission seat once held by the feisty and controversial Sheila Alu.

All seven candidates met Monday with the Sun Sentinel Editorial Board.

Ferguson said she has a simple fix for the bickering and drama on the dais that makes Sunrise one of the more politically volatile cities in Broward County.

Ferguson noted that the four of the five commission seats are held by men.

"I'm appalled at the behavior I see on that dais," Ferguson told the Editorial Board. "Four men is nice. I like men. But there should be a woman up there. There needs to be someone up there without testosterone flowing."

Ferguson says she'd have her own way of quieting down the ruckus that sometimes erupts between commissioners.

"All I have to do is roll my eyes at Joey [Scuotto] and he'll shut up," she said. "And Larry [Sofield], I'll just threaten to beat him up."

The off-the-cuff remarks brought chuckles from competitors Yomtov "Vivi" Assidon, John Fusaro, Kris Hobbs, David Iannacone, Neil Kerch and James Tabeek.

When asked what set her apart from the rest, Ferguson argued that a member of the fairer sex might be just what the commission needs.
